Last week my oldest daughter turned 4! Her birthday itself was a milestone for me as a parent, and also marked four years since my journey toward living a healthier, more fit lifestyle began. My daughter was born 5 weeks premature, for reasons unknown (at the time) to everyone, and left me searching for an answer. Fast forward 7 months to a biometric health screening performed at my office…following a finger stick blood draw the nurse asked if I had eaten yet that day. The answer was yes and it lead me to ask questions about why I was so tired, achy, and dizzy all the time, and ultimately a call to my primary care doctor to schedule an appointment.
After having routine blood work performed and meeting with my doctor I finally had an answer to my symptoms and was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism by definition is a common endocrine disorder in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. It can cause a number of symptoms, such as tiredness, poor ability to tolerate cold, and weight gain. ((Definition via wikipedia) This definition was spot on explaining the symptoms I had been experiencing over the last 7 months, and in addition I also experienced joint pain and depression, all of which I contributed to being a new mom. While some of my symptoms could have been partly related to being a new mom with an infant, I was also relieved to know that I had some understanding on why I was feeling so ill.
